The need to reduce vehicle weights in order to improve fuel economy has led to the substitution of lighter and/or stronger materials in many applications. Among the materials under consideration are HSLA steels, aluminum alloys and fiber reinforced composites. The selection of new materials depends on the development of component designs which are cost effective in terms of service performance and manufacturing feasibility, while achieving the desired weight reduction. In this talk the properties of the new materials will be described and campared with those of conventional materials from the standpoint of the above criteria. (Wied)
