The movement of ice floes past offshore structures imposes fluctuating loads on the structures, and the resulting ice floe induced structural vibrations may be critical in the structural design. Because of the random nature of these ice forces, probabilistic methods have been employed for the structural response analysis, and the most commonly used method is the power spectral method of random vibration analysis. The present paper critically evaluates the power spectral representation of ice floe induced forces on offshore structures. Certain shortcomings of the present formulations are identified, and suggestions for further research are given.
