Evaluation of the tracking performance of a locomotive requires a knowledge of its response to typical rail inputs, at typical speed conditions. This paper presents an analytical model for calculating the response of a locomotive to random irregularities in track surface. Wide band track roughness spectra are considered, as well as narrow band contributions due to rail joints. Typical response results are computed for a sample locomotive, and evaluated against safety, ride quality, and adhesion performance criteria. (Hannebauer)
