A test program was carried out to assess hard surface coatings developed for reducing scratching problems encountered with plastic glazings used in Army aircraft. The tests employed simulated aircraft flight and handling conditions, and consisted of the following: a windshield wiper test, a felt-pad abrader test, solvent resistance, hardness, impact, ultraviolet exposure, humidity, and weatherometer testing. The coatings were found to substantially increase the abrasion resistance of several types of plastic materials; water and ultraviolet radiation were factors adversely affecting coating performance.
