The paper emphasises the need for efficient spares support to meet the demands for greater warship availability. It describes how support considerations now form an integral part of the ship and equipment design process. After discussing the various requirements for spares, from those required for setting-to-work during building to the spares required for ship and equipment refit, the paper then details the Royal Navy's procedures for funding, ranging, scaling and documenting spares support. The paper highlights important factors that need to be considered, such as the timing and size of the initial spares purchases and ends by discussing how some of the major pitfalls in spares support can be avoided.
