It is currently of interest to investigate shock propagation along 90 degree bends, which takes place if the shock tube is used as a device for the two-phase flow study or cylindrical shock implosion test and in general when a weak shock travels along curved ducts of the various industrial duct systems. In this paper, the results of detailed experiments are shown in order to observe shock diffraction and reflection around the bends and then to find the optimal configuration of the 90 degree bend that would make stable shock propagation possible. The two-dimensional bends used here consist of six outside and five inside walls of different radii of curvature and are installed in the cylindrical test section of the shock tube. Consequently, the curvature effect of the bend on the shock stability and propagation is quantitatively clarified for air and CO2 and shock Mach numbers from 1.1 to 6.0.
