The strength and stiffness design process is described in terms of its constituents. An integrated structural analysis and design system developed at Boeing, ATLAS, is described in terms of its system architecture and its technical capabilities and examples of its use are given. Finally, the basic motivation for the development of such analysis tools and the impact of design automation are considered.
