The Institute of Petroleum's co-operative work on manual transmissions began in 1967, one of its objects being to investigate the influence of lubricants on synchromesh performance and striker fork wear. The first step was to collect detailed design data for the gear-boxes currently manufactured in the UK. This was followed by a study of the effect of geometry, materials and lubricants. Next, two manual transmission test rigs were designed and constructed. Several different manual gear-boxes were tested. Synchromesh performance was assessed and striker fork wear measured. Preliminary results obtained using engine oils, a streight mineral oil and axle oils, indicate that there is a marked lubricant effect on synchromesh performance.
