The selection of the economically optimum speed for an oil tanker is discussed, together with the various philosophies adopted in achieving the optimum fuel consumption when the optimum speed involves operating the propulsion plant at reduced powers. The development of the simple steam cycle used in the ships operated the author's company is outlined, and descriptions given of modifications and operational changes used or considered to improve the cycle efficiency at reduced power levels. The effect of reduced speed and power on boiler and condenser fouling is also discussed.
