This paper begins with a short description of the historical background of the F-type engine since its introduction on the market in 1962 and then gives detailed information about the development during recent years of some main components like the cylinder block, cylinder head with valves and turbocharger system. It describes service experience from F engines in heavy duty marine and stationary service all over the world including the U.S. and also stresses the importance of the applications systems supporting the engine.
