The report provides a methodology for creating an initial rough design of a rail rapid transit car, or for evaluating an existing design. It is based on optimizing the design features by minimizing the sum of the annual costs of purchasing, power consumption, maintenance, and onboard operating labor for a fleet of such vehicles. Linear programming is used to arrive at a solution based on the interaction of several hundred equations which describe the complex inter-relationships amongst the elements of car design, dimensions, and performance, and the various components, and sub-assemblies which comprise the vehicle, and the associated costs.
