This paper investigates the failure mechanisms associated with casings of 20-mm ammunition during firing of the weapon. This is achieved through an elastic-plastic finite element analysis of the projectile/casing system. The present analysis has been successful in analyzing the effect of the minute geometric differences, associated with the various projtile/casing systems, to failure occurrence rates. The study has also identified, for the first time, a failure mechanism which conforms the actual firing situation.
