Oil diffusion pumps and titanium sublimation pumps hitherto used in the five space simulation Chambers of ESTEC were replaced by cryopumps of high speed. This change was required in order to get hydrocarbonfree vacua and a higher effective pumping speed. Cryopumps answer these two requirements in the most economical way when operated with small integrated 2-stage refrigerators of the Philips K 20 type. The largest unit has a pumping speed of about 70.000 ltr/sec for N2, the smallest unit of about 17.000 ltr/sec. The paper describes in detail the design of these cryopumps and their mode of operation.
