Cumulative fatigue damage for the lattice legs of a mobile jack-up platform, which operates in different areas of the world, is very difficult to estimate because different portions of the legs are stressed under different environmental conditions. This paper describes a fatigue analysis performed by the author for one of the jack-up platforms designed by The Offshore Company. The analysis was based on a drilling record compiled from the operation history of several of the jack-up platforms which have operated in the North Sea. Stress concentration factors for two different K-joints obtained from finite element analysis, comparison of different S-N curves, comparison of fatigue lives for mobile and fixed platforms, and comparison of theoretical results with field experience are discussed in this paper.
