This paper discusses the design features, operating characteristics, assemblies, buildup, and serviceability of the model 7271 compact double reduction layshaft design marine transmission for use at continuous horsepower up to 1300 at 1200 rpm and 1750 at 1800 rpm. It is capable of transmitting full rated power continuously through the forward or reverse gear train with reduction ratio ranging from 4.50:1 to 8.17:1.
