Vapor Compression Distillation (VCD) has been selected as the prefered approach to waste water reclamation on board long term manned spacecraft. Serios efforts to adapt the process to manned applications started in 1961 and several improvements have been made since then. Current developments are being directed to increasing reliability and performance through modification and redesign of components that have exhibited deficiencies. This paper discusses the VCD development activity and proposed component improvements which will be implemented in a preprototype unit being considered for a Project-Spacelab test.
