Considers the design of control algorithms for vehicles moving on fixed rails. The control performance is evaluated either by total cost per trip or, for constant travel time, by an energy criterion. The specific features of the problem is the dependence of the resistance to motion on the coordinate of the vehicle. The maximum principle is applied to derive the control switching graph. Analytical relations for the optimal path parameters are derived and real-time vehicle control algorithms are developed.
