Complex satellites for various purposes have been and are being designed. As illustration, the characteristics of SPOT 1, a helio-synchronous satellite, are discussed. The need arises during the design stage to consider the effect of extreme environmental changes on the satellite's performance. A simulator used in such a situation is SIMLES of Intespace (Ingenierie Tests en Environnement Spatiale) at Toulouse. The ability of this equipment to reproduce various interspatial conditions is looked at. The simulated sum is of particular interest, and its various properties, such as the simulation of an eclipse, are considered. The operation of this space simulator is through three TSX7 robots, and one TSX87 robot as main controller. These are programmable, and have a hierarchised and distributed architecture. Their functions, with their fault diagnosis procedures, are discussed.
