Major aircraft manufacturers are taking a leading role in the development of paperless manufacturing systems. Shop floor personnel are provided convenient access to the most current information needed to build the aircraft, thus reducing network and increasing quality. Gaining this level of control in a complex assembly environment requires a decision-making capability beyond traditional data processing approaches. It is envisaged that a development of an expert system can provide such a capability.
