A description is given of a method used in the development of the FAA's Advanced Automation System (ASS) of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A team of air traffic controllers participated in a structured requirements engineering and design evaluation process to help develop the AAS man-machine interface. The charter of the team encompasses deriving and documenting man-machine interface requirements and evaluating the operational suitability of designs offered by two competing prime contractors.
