Aspects of the software design of a satellite communications system monitor (CSM), including the structure of the software and the functions available to the user of the system, are discussed. The CSM software has been designed to handle a variety of communications measurements using a wide range of IEEE-488 bus instruments. The manner in which the user controls the CSM has been designed to satisfy two conflicting requirements. On one hand the user must be able to attend to items at a very detailed level and on the other hand the user must be buffered from an overwhelming quantity of data.
