For the first time in Japan, Toshiba has successfully developed 3000 kW fleon-cooled type silicon rectifiers, DC high-speed circuit breakers, and DC gapless surge-arresters for 3000 V DC electrification systems. The silicon rectifier is an exceptionally low maintenance, completely self-cooled type utilizing fleon evaporative cooling. The DC high-speed circuit breaker is capable of limiting and interrupting fault currents at high speeds through improved interruption speed and arc-suppression capability. The DC surge-arrester is a gapless type utilizing a nonlinear resistor. This surge-arrester is compact and light weight, and features quick response to abnormal voltages and low residual voltages. Recently, all of the above-mentioned items have been fabricated and delivered to Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos for its suburban Rio de Janeiro lines.
