Software quality and reliability detection are essential in the software development cycle. Also important is the increasing ratio of software to hardware costs. More important is the increasing reliance upon larger and more complex computer programs which are used to control and make decisions on the status of safety-critical systems, such as nuclear reactors, transportation systems, medical life support equipment, and military weapon systems. The author discusses major difference between hardware and software reliability and discusses software reliability indices. Tables are presented summarising preventative techniques, detective techniques, and preventative and detective tools.
