The 'Poste de Manoeuvre a Commande Informatique' (PMCI) is a signal box based on a modular multiprocessor design. The PMCI allows new functions to be added in the signal box, to reduce interfaces between interlocking and other systems such as a train describer, centralised control, passenger information, etc. This computerised system is based on a non-centralised configuration, using specialised modules, each having its own task. All the modules are linked through a communication network. The problems raised by fail safe and availability demands led to new design methods, to a new lay out and to automatic testing according to needs.
