The NTT has developed an aviation telephone system. This system operates on the 800 MHz frequency band. With six base stations, it covers almost all domestic air routes in Japan. Furthermore, it utilizes phase modulation (PM) to satisfy the required speech quality for the public telephone service. Mobile control stations (MCS) and automobile switching centers (AMC) are shared with the automobile telephone system to reduce the system's construction costs. This service permits airline passengers to make telephone calls using public telephone equipment which accepts the NTT magnetic telephone cards commonly used in the ordinary telephone network.
