For pt.VI D see ibid., vol.AES-22, no.3, p.291 (1986). Experimental results on measures against rain attenuation in the 30/20-GHz satellite links for the Japanese Sakura communications satellite are described. The techniques studied are grouped into three categories: transmission power control, site diversity, and frequency band switching. To test the transmission power control technique, uplink power control using both open-loop and closed-loop control techniques as well as up/downlink power control were examined. It was also confirmed that the site-diversity technique was effective. Furthermore, by combining the received signals and using a forward error correction technique, better link quality was obtained than with a normal site-diversity switching technique. A frequency band switching technique was applied to a TDMA system. In the experiment, the 30/20 and the 6/4 GHz bands were used simultaneously, changing their transmitting frame formats depending on the rain attenuation of the 30/20 GHz band.
