Chassis dynamometers play an extremely important role in the grasping of overall functions and performance in automobiles. The major purpose of this equipment is to replace testing on a test course by indoor testing. Some tests may be done on the chassis dynamometer only such as exhaust gas testing noise tests and high/low temperature performance tests. The tendency is to pursue higher qualities in terms of driving comfort (vibration, noise, air conditioning, controllability, etc.) and improved safety factors (brake performance, driving stability, visibility, etc.). In addition, to automate and save labor on testing, required specifications have tended to increase in sophistication and complexity. As observed in terms of facility configuration, overall facilities tend to be arranged compactly as a result of the adoption of roller direct-coupled dynamometers and MEIDYS (electric inertia compensation unit). Trends observed in these facilities and their techniques are described.
