Systems provided on conventional open sections of motorway must be included in motorway tunnels, but generally at a much higher density. Emergency telephones are usually provided at approximately 60 m intervals, compared with 1.5 km on open sections. CCTV cameras and traffic loops are provided at similarly higher densities. The exact equipping of a tunnel will depend on many factors, including length, gradient, location, local regulations, and size and form of tunnel section.
