The long-term goal is to create a single, modular avionics system for communication, navigation, targeting, fire control, offensive and defensive EW, monitoring of systems status, and other functions, all controlled by a central computer and connected by a multiplex bus. One of the leading efforts in this field is the Air Force's Pave Pillar program, which is intended to create the architecture for such a system; its results will be integrated into Army and Navy avionics programs. Pave Pillar has not yet reached the hardware stage; it has, however, produced some definite concepts for a fully integrated avionics system.
