The author provides a comprehensive profile on the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) which is located under the solid granite of Cheyenne Mountain in the state of Colorado. The 'interface problem' which in 1979 allowed data from a computer test tape to enter the operational portion of the missile warning system is referred to. This together with another false warning in June 1980 severely damaged public confidence in the system. To rectify this situation, a dollar1 billion upgrade and modification of the C3I facilities has been initiated. The author discusses the various programs, including the SPADOC IV upgrade which aims to provide the first operational capability for command and control of space defense. It is hoped that such a facelift will prevent NORAD from being painted as an expensive and possibly dangerous anachronism in the future.
