Toshiba completed a six-axle 3-kV DC chopper-controlled electric locomotive intended for overseas railways using a new-type of semiconductor GTO (gate turnoff) thyristor: and highly efficient Freon-evaporative cooling technology for power semiconductors. Although the rail gage is narrow (1065 mm), the locomotive output is raised to 3090 kW. In addition, a microprocessor-based digital control system improves the locomotive driving ability and facilitates maintenance and repair of the electrical equipment through a self-diagnosis function.
