Optimal control of a nonlinear deterministic object is considered in a general statement. A rather simple approximate method is given, based on simultaneous integration of the conjugate system and the Riccati equation with initial conditions given at one endpoint of the trajectory. In the context of a linear-quadratic problem it is proved that the method is exact. An example of an airplane guidance system is analyzed.
