The authors describe the new measurement method intended for guidance implementation during underwater petroleum connections, in the case of horizontal links between a production well head and the effluent discharge pipe. The relative positions of the connector and flange are continuously determined by means of three detector networks, designated as rheographic, approach acoustical and penetration acoustical, and then displayed on a cathode screen for the operator. A study is now under way for an autonomous device in which the handling arm will be controlled by means of servomechanisms.
