Some historical details about the electrical battery car are traced in, since Edison's 'Electric Runabout' as long ago as 1889. The Brown Boveri project has been aimed at a range of 250 km at a speed of about 100 km/hr. The availability of a suitable accumulator is a key feature. Stages in the development of a sodium-sulphur cell are described. The target specific energy level is around 200 Wh/kg. Comparisons with other cells are made. Brief notes are included on motive power/weight ratios, differential gears and electric utility network availability for recharging.
