Since March 1 the ER200 trainset has been operating in revenue service between Moscow and Leningrad at 180 km/h, and 200 km/h running is in prospect. Soviet Railway's cab signalling system - which already covers 56 per cent of the 143000 km network - has been developed to allow high speed running with extended braking distances. When running under a restrictive signal aspect, extra vigilance tests are applied and speed limits are enforced automatically.
