By relieving the dispatcher of clerical work and automatically setting up routine crossings of trains on single track, computer-aided dispatching makes it possible for one control centre to supervise several thousand route-km in North America. Even on nonsignalled lines a computer can be used to issue train orders, thus enhancing safety. Just over the horizon are advanced train control systems that will integrate the driving and dispatching functions, reducing accidents and delays while saving fuel.
