Recent demonstrations of an electrical pulsed power supply that uses ordnance components point out new options that could revolutionize electronic warfare. The generator, based on new pulsed plasma magnetohydrodynamic (PPMHD) technology, converts the chemical energy of an explosive cartridge directly into pulsed electrical energy. Each cartridge produces electrical power levels of several gigawatts and total pulse energies approaching a megajoule. The PPMHD generator can be operated much like a gun: fire, reload, and fire again. Repetition rates comparable with existing rapid fire guns - up to 100 pulses per second - appear feasible.
