Correlation - the process of comparing two signals or data patterns sample by sample to assess their similarity - can serve applications ranging from spread-spectrum communications to optical alignment. And the advent of high-speed, low-power digital correlators, which overcome the calibration drift that analog correlators can exhibit when exposed to varying operating temperatures and voltages, is making the technique increasingly attractive in such applications. Digital correlation requires selection of an appropriate level of quantization (resolution) for each incoming signal. Digital correlators fall into one of three categories, according to the input-function resolution: classical sign-match 1-bit devices; multibit pattern-matching devices; and full multibit FIR filters. Choice of digital correlator is discussed and various applications.
