Advances in avionics have made possible the implementation of several display and control design principles that were once impractical with conventional electromechanical display and control technology. A system approach is applied to the design and evaluation of integrated forward-looking and downward-looking electronic pictorial displays for VTOL aircraft including helicopters. Effects of critical display and control design variables in horizontal displays for vertical and translational flight are determined experimentally.
