The conventional automotive wiring harness, although an efficient electrical interconnection system, is coming under pressure through new constraints on both size and weight. The ultimate solution seems to be a multiplex system, but as an interim measure remote switching offers an attractive solution. The problems expected to be encountered by designers of vehicle wiring systems in the future are examined and a number of potential solutions described, including the development of a nonmultiplexed remote switching system which is believed to offer a reliable substitute for the harness at a lower cost than the alternatives.
