Recent traffic-control equipment and systems are reviewed. Equipment using 16 pairs of photodiode arrays as an image sensor can detect vehicle speed within an average error of - 1 km/h and a standard deviation of 2.3 km/h. A highways advisory radio system using 1.627 kHz will soon be put to practical use. Drivers demand the installation of graphite traffic-information boards. A mobile display unit using a speech synthesizer will be available in the near future. Microscopic and dynamic control of traffic signals is required.
