In spite of the fact that the industry currently produces highly accurate timing instruments, the marine chronometers and certain other clocks are not provided with any facilities to check the required accuracy, either in the manufacturing process or under service conditions. In conjunction with an electronic-counting frequency meter (ECFM) the PPKh-1 instrument has been designed to measure the corrections for marine chronometers having a diurnal variation no greater than 60 sec. The permissible checking error for the chronometers does not exceed 0.02 sec. The instrument comprises two basic units - a pulse convertor and a shaping unit for the standard time signals. The instrument produces from the acoustic signals of the chronometer's escapement both sound and light signals as well as pulses to trigger the ECFM and to synchronize the signals and pulses that are formed with the specific positions of the chronometer's second hand.
