Discusses the US Navy's development of second- and third-generation sensors and weapons to counter the Soviet submarine fleet. Emphasis is being placed on upgrading existing acoustic sensor and signal processing systems, and in the development of nonacoustic detection systems. Major sensor improvement programs are: the surveillance towed array sonar system and the rapidly deployable surveillance system, a mobile monitoring network of aircraft-dropped or submarine-deployed buoys that passively sense and collect data on submarines operating in shallow waters.
