The problems of testing and evaluating systems software are discussed and some of the guidelines issued by the Department of Defence are presented. It could be argued that in practice the intent of these requirements have not been met within the Army. Consequently, a number of software shortfalls in test and evaluation exist. These shortfalls are examined and a recommended framework for developing detailed test and evaluation methodologies for battlefield automated systems is given.
