In connection with the scarcity of motor fuels and the limited reserves of petroleum as well as with the continuous growth in demand, the price of motor fuels is rising rapidly. It is therefore very important to improve the economy of internal combustion engines (ICE) and lower the requirements for the quality of petroleum fuels, as well as to develop and utilize fuels of nonpetroleum origin. Basic ways are considered for improving the economy of ICE, together with the possibility of utilizing lower-grade motor fuels and substitutes for petroleum fuel, together with the concomitant problems.
