The installation at the Villeneuve-Saint-Georges works of the SNCF is described. A complete rake of two power cars and eight intermediate trailer coaches, of about 315 tonnes tare and 200 m long, is lifted by 13 pairs of electromechanical lifting jacks, each exerting a force of 15 tonnes at 0.2 to 0.8 m/min. The operation is overseen from a general control station to which each jack operator reports on completion of the preliminaries. The first higher level is intermediate between placing of the lifting arms under the jacking points and the second level, which is the upper limit of the 'critical region' wherein connections between bodies and bogies are made or unmade. At the third level the suspension springs cease to be loaded and the bogies can be released. At the top level (adjusted to 3.900 m above rail) the bogies can be wheeled out from under the train and replaced. Mechanical and electrical safety measures are described. The monitoring of pulses from two-channel proximity detectors associated with each jack, to ensure uniform lift throughout the length of the train, is explained.
