Describes the two basic methods that enable the vast majority of semicustom chips to be implemented. These are gate arrays and automated standard cells which lend themselves readily to automated design by computer, because of their regular structures and their tried and tested reliability. Advances in technology now allow the whole design process from logic diagram to the preparation of masks for chip manufacture, to be carried out in one operation. Design automation is therefore an essential ingredient in providing the most economic semi-custom circuit for use in automobile electronics.
