Discusses the basic factors to be considered when designing naval HF communications equipment with a measure of resistance to Electronic Counter Measures (ECM). In particular the article addresses the design parameters associated with the technique of frequency hopping which has now become an established means of defeating an enemy jamming system. Much of the HF equipment in service does not lend itself readily to retrospective modification as a platform for frequency hopping, therefore the hardware requirements are briefly discussed.
