Provides an overview of the types of precision units available commercially at this time, plus a survey of some of the more important triservice and Air Force systems for which they are required. The different elements of these systems, such as space and airborne, ground-stationary and mobile, and manpack platforms, place differing requirements on the oscillator to be used. A description is given of the considerations governing clock selection as a function of range and operational environment of representative platforms. The increase in demand for precision time-keeping has sparked much interest in the frequency/time community during this period, and a summary of some of the current research and development activities is provided including a projection of the trends that may be expected in the next decade.
