With the first catenary mast erected on March 10, and Brown Boveri of Mannheim chosen in April to supply two prototype 4000 kW locomotives, Danish State Railways (DSB) is well set on the path to electrification of 1065 route-km by 2005. Although DSB already has 139 route-km of suburban lines in operation at 1.5 kV DC, and her neighbours to south and north use 15 kV 162/3 Hz, economic analysis showed 25 kV 50 Hz to be easily the best choice for main lines. Sagged-simple catenary of British design will be suitable for 200 km/h although the mixed-traffic locos will be geared for 175 km/h.
